The best book on the English language is The Reader Over Your Shoulder by Graves and Hodge.

I'll take a look at it, it looks like one of the better 'how-to' books.

Strunk and White instruct us not to inject opinion into our writing. They also tell us to avoid "fancy words." Would you want to read literature devoid of "fancy words"?

Most of these types of books come across as somewhat prissy, but as a writer manqué, (apologies to S&W) I'm always open to suggestions....

Found it in a used bookstore the other day. What a treat - I'm so glad you recommended it. I don't like to mark my books, but with this one I'll make an exception. There are so many wonderful tidbits in there - and I've only read the first chapter!
