Hawk, its not an excuse - it an understanding of the way things have evolved.

Life, and culture, is CONSTANTLY evolving Kumar.. There's a damn good reason that western civilization advanced while Islamic society stagnated, or declined. It's called regard for human rights and democratic values.

If you look back far enough you'll inevitably find that there wasn't much difference between the rules of conduct within barbarian clans and Arab tribes.

And this is even more the case between Jewish tribes and Arab tribes, both of which shared many of the same clan rules and traditions.

So it begs the question why Jewish social rules have evolved over the past 1,000 years, but those of Arab and other Mid-East cultures have remained backward..

I opine it's because no one has ever required these mid-east cultures to modernize and moderate their social cultures to reflect the international norms of human and women's rights that seem to underlie much of current international cultural values as reflected in the organizations such as the UN.

I can understand a whole lot about why there has, or hasn't been progress in cultural moderation in various parts of the world.

But what I can't understand is this incessant refusal to advocate progressive values in these repressive and backward societies, or our willingness to excuse that lack of progress.
