Ethnic Hawaiians suffered the same fate as native people's everywhere -- military defeat, confiscation of their property and destruction of their social and economic systems. Hawaiians have attempted to salvage what they can and in some ways have done remarkably well simply to continue to exist. As for "Hawaii" as an American entity, it is heavily dominated by working-class unions who manage to negotiate a pretty good living compared to the slaves that work in "resorts" in more impoverished third-world island resort destinations around the world.
