Many have focused on the “January Effect”, when smaller stocks tend to outperform larger ones. While the first day of trading for the year is hardly indicative of a trend, the Russell 2000, the broadest measure of small-cap stocks, outperformed all other indexes on Friday, gaining nearly 4 points. Also helping small stocks could be the fact that after December, January has been the best performing month of the year for stocks
