Reaction to Kurdish autonomy.

If Kurds Insist, Turkmens Will Demand a Federal Region

Turkmens have added a new dimension to the debates on ethnic federation initiated by Kurdish groups in Iraq.

Turkmen member of Iraq's temporary Governing Council, Sorgul Cabuk said: "If federation is going to be given to the Kurds, we, Turkmens would like a federation. Nobody can take control of Kirkuk, the Turkmen homeland, away from itself."

The only Turkmen member on the Governing Council, Songul Cabuk gave the message in a statement to the Essark ul Avsat newspaper in London.

Cabuk said in the interview: "Kirkuk is Turkmen country. They say that Turkey has been behind us and gives us financial support. Have not Kurdish groups received financial support from Turkey for many years? We are Iraqis. Everybody knows it."

It was reported that Shiite Turkmens have also demanded support for a Turkmen Federal Region by applying to Shiite members of the Governing Council.

Shiite Turkmen groups said: "Establishing a Kurdish Federation would separate Iraq. In contrast to this, if it is required, a Turkmen federation must be established."

The Shiite Turkmens are seeking the support of all Turkmen groups to support them on this issue.
