Do not be so fast as to jump on some concepts that would reinforce your ideas that our efforts in Iraq are destined for failure.
Comparisons to Viet-nam and Guatemala can fail for many reasons.
1. The terrain and native activities. Iraq is open country, no jungles to screen activities or hide in.People were well paid (at one time), living mostly in cities, dependant on urban life and a steady stream of money to survive. Forgot how to live in the jungle or off the land.
Sattelites, airplanes, IR sensors, can detect movement of enemy forces and inspections at road blocks can stop transport of war materials or personnel.

2. Saddam was everywhere ( witness the statues). Eliminating anyone who dared to express his own true thoughts or aspire to take a unique political course or propose an insurrection.
3. The economy was almost totally dependant on the huge income from oil which can still exist and represent a great hope for any straight-thinking Iraqi.
4. Iraqi insurgents do not have any useful or powerful outside supporters such as the Communists to provide arms, troops, food or moral support. No friends in Iran, no friends in Kuwait, no friends in SA,no friends in Turkey, nor even among the Kurds.
The recent military demonstrations In Serbia, Afghanistan, and Iraq- three wars in which we suffered a loss of roughly 700 combat casualties total will prevent
any Nation from helping a major Iraqi uprising
With Saddams entire powerfully armed nation overrun in three weeks, how long would Syria last?
