Now I know what happened to this guy.

If Gibbon and Toynbee (and to mention them that way in one breath is to betray an incalculably mammoth ignorance) are "Beemers" then Barzun is a Renault Dauphine, or maybe an intellectual Yugo. Of all the phony, upper-East-side, pretenders to learning on the lower slopes of Morningside Heights, Barzun was the most extraordinary clown. He hoaxed a whole generation of wannabe pseudo-intellectuals.
