What do you make of S&W's imperative to "Write with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs" ?

Hmmmm. I don't remember that one and I'm too lazy to go look for my copy. I would very much miss adjectives and adverbs.

Hi Charley!
Taken out of context, that is misleading. Farther on they say:
This is not to disparage adjectives and adverbs; they are indispensable parts of speech.

The force of good writing comes from accurate and strong nouns and verbs. ALl the frills and ruffles in the world can't turn a poorly designed dress into Dior. At least that is my interpretation of that statement.
(I keep a copy of S&W, Fowler's, and my high school grammar book next to me when I write but sometimes they intimidate me)
