As always, most Westerners are always so self righeous and forget their mistakes and blunders and deceits. Here is where China could be today - a disenfranchised society of coolies and thugs whose land and home is opiumed and split among the French, Americans, Japanese, Germans, Brits, etc, etc, vis-a-vis 1920's. Mao prevented that from happening. He prevented the mutilation, sodomization, etc, etc, of Chinese China. On the other hand, if the anti-communism fever and paranoia in the US was not so strong, then China could have developed throughout the second half of 1900's to the present, as equal partners in economic development and wealth creation and distribution. Remember also that Mao's side kick was Chou En-Lai, who could easily have been a very fine and polished westernized diplomat. How can we so easily forget that Mao's (or was it Chou's) idealism and inspiration came from George Washington and the American revolution. It was US paranoia policies and politics that prevented the development and wordly progress that China could experienced throughout the second half of 1900's. If only General Stillwell had ears in Washington DC, the world would have been different and how different it would be today. Probably not the Japan and Singapore that we know today. So here we are in 21st century. He made what Chinese are today, not the coolies that many would like them to be. Sure, they are the lowest cost laborers for the world, but they do it with personal and national pride, independence, integrity, and ability to accumulate weatlth and prosperity. Definitely and without any doubt, they are NOT COOLIES and NOT OPIUMED. So, snort your own phlegm which can be just as gross.
