Why the knee jerk reaction to the estate tax? We tax labor, cap gains, interest, purchases of good, and so on. Is it because you view it as double taxation? Or is there more to it. Few of us meet the current minimums--i dont quite get the opposite religous fervor of eliminating this tax altogether. Frankly I would like to see the govt get off the back of lower and middle class taxpayers first. If you add fica to the equation lets say of two 60k/year marrieds, you will see an effective tax rate that makes it almost impossible to succeed.
I am for the bush tax cuts but never understood why the estate tax had to be eliminated. Raise the exclusions, lower the rates, thats fine with me. But elimination is a symbolic argument for the left to harp on and it isnt at all clear to me that they are wrong again given my middle class example above. Politics are about compromise. The election still may be close. Republicans as democrats need to gravitate to the middle, now that the tax agenda is largely in effect. mike
