On the economic front, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that new orders for U.S. factory goods sank 1.4 per cent in November, the largest drop since last April. Orders rose by 2.4 per cent in October. Demand for transportation equipment fell 1.3 per cent, while computers and electronic products plunged 10.7 per cent. Machinery orders climbed 2.1 per cent.

The huge U.S. services sector grew for the ninth month in a row in December but at a slower pace than analysts were expecting, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The non-manufacturing index dropped to 58.6 in December from 60.1 in November, while the employment index fell to 54.0 from 54.9 in November. A reading above 50 indicates growth.
