Another reviewer said the 1st edition of the Fowler's is the preferred one. Says the 3rd edition isn't the real Fowler anymore. Not that it's any less authoritative, but the wit and charm of the 1st edition are diluted. I wonder if these people know what they're talking about... Tough to know which usage maven to go with... I noticed while browsing shelves at Borders there is a new edition of Johnson's dictionary out, with selections from the original included. I guess Johnson isn't going away anytime soon...
