Steve,

I told Jim several days ago that the charts indicated it was time for shorting the homeboys in the short term. One of the best time to short stocks is when they break below the 50 day moving average. We saw that in several of the homeboys earlier.

Institutional buyers will often support prices as they come down to the 50 day moving average. When that support doesn't come, it often dictates that lower prices are coming. On a risk vs reward scenario, that's the ideal time to short a position, especially if volume is high while the price is falling.

I wouldn't touch them until I saw an easy setup, like a strong move in interest rates and technical pattern suggesting loss of buying interest. Another setup would be another 15% dollar devaluation. At any point if the dollar selling gets out of hand, the fed will be forced to move rates up and the homeys will react in proportion to the suddeness of fed defense of the dollar.

From the movement of the precious metals markets, I would say that further dollar devaluation is in the cards. Even lowly silver is catching a bid.

Steve,

I took a short position on the 3rd in MDC and HOV. The home stocks were going down the last two trading days of the year and were also going down when the market was going up on heavy volume. My plan was to short right at the first of the year, but some sellers jumped the gun and took profits in 2003.

MDC was brother bums idea, but it looked good to me also.
