Re: John Le Carre book.
He should stick to novels of the past
<<<"I'm much more interested in the organic procession of history. I'm not wishing for the good old days of the Cold War," says the author. "The reverse: What I find extremely upsetting is the speed with which the one hyperpower has recreated an atmosphere of terror.">>>

IMO that atmostphere of fear was very purposely created and well done, and its working like a charm. OBL driven into hiding, Saddam found in a spider hole, the Taliban dispersed,Iran and Libya permitting inspections, Syria beginning to cooperate, South Korea and Japan sending troops, N. Korea agreeing to talk,Saudi Arabia chasing terrorists at home.

<<<His views on the Iraq war are peppered throughout the novel, which was completed in June of 2003. "The war on Iraq was illegitimate . . . It was a criminal and moral conspiracy. No provocation, no link with al-Qaeda, no weapons of Armageddon. Tales of complicity and Osama were self-serving bullshit. It was an old colonial war dressed up as a crusade for Western life and liberty, and it was launched by a clique of war-hungry Judeo-Christian geopolitical fantasists who hijacked the media and exploited America's post-9/11 psychopathy.">>>
The Iraq war started when Saddam invaded Kuwait , and had not ended legally because he never complied with the terms of the truce.
Carre is correct in the US being a hyperpower, which must cause grave concern to those who do not like US.
But a different President or Administration would not change that fact. They can only do what is authorized by Congress so we could just as well blame any wrongdoing on Congress
Are our elected representatives so stupid and gullible to be misdirected by one man? Are all those many years of reports on Saddams WMD efforts by Hans Blix and previous Iraq WMD Inspectors pure fiction. Was there a great conspiracy in effect for 12 years directed by Neocoms, to have the UN falsify all their data.?
But I think it fitting that Mr Carre can sit in a quiet home in the English countryside , while British police raid the Mosques and Muslim homes, taking away their explosives their risin, their GTA missiles, their shoe bombs or whatever else they are planning to use against Christian civilians.
Searching baggage and passengers at the airports, guarding the perimeters.
There is no precedent for how a modern hyperpower should
behave. Are we so powerful that it does not matter if we lose a city or two? Should we have bought off Bin Laden with money as the Saudis did?. Should we have left Saddam alone to put warheads on those long range (and banned )missiles which he had and was continuing to improve even in 2003?
Let those within missile range, such as Israel ,Iran, SA,Kuwait and Turkey figure what to do about them?

IMO, john le carré's new book deserves consideration...

Thanks for the note, scott. Apparently, the reviews have been quite good save for Michiko Kakutani in The New York Times today. He considers the political theme too shrill and dogmatic. I can't recall Kakutani's politics just off hand but I think his are fairly conservative.
