Lindy, it seems that a New United Nations [NUN]is gathering momentum. Once a bunch of bureaucrats and big-noters get hold of it, they'll be unstoppable.

20 years ago I thought it would take a while to get a decent NUN going and that when it was, I'd be in the vanguard of those opposing an over-bearing behemoth, with some wet behind the ears whipper-snapper lecturing me about how a NUN is a good thing. I didn't really think it would take twice as long as CDMA to be the zeitgeist. Boy, things move slowly. Maybe if they set these things to swing music and put some girls in the discussions, things would move along more quickly and cheerfully.

Kofi's sombre "... and a happy bloody New Year to you all" with no smile and a lowering, low-pitched voice, at the end of his Happy New Year address showed what's wrong with the current setup. Hu Jintao's "... happy New Year which will be much happier as long as those evil-doers in the province of Taiwan do as they are told and we don't have to kill them" wasn't much better.

There was a hilarious mainland article I saw describing the situation with Taiwan in such terms as "...the so-called "President" and so-called "elections" and so-called "referendum"." I forget where it was. Maybe Google knows.
