Make sure the BIOS of your PC supports disk sizes beyond 8 GB.

Eventhough you may not have room for the hard drive, can you open up the box and be able to attach the power and ribbon to the new drive outside of it, making a temporary second drive and use somekind of copy software (maybe even one that the new drive provides - maxtor I recall has this in Maxblast) and then remove the old one and install the new one?
