I'm leaving on vacation in a few days or I would take the time to do a little more research into the statistics of scientific funding. I'm honestly not sure how much is private and how much is public.

Over the last 30 or so years we've witnessed what the politics of science does to a nation i.e. the decimation of forests and the surrounding landscapes, and the devastating loss of life and property due to the don't touch policies fostered by some of those intrepid scientists. Thank goodness these and other policies are being questioned... witness the Kyoto treaty.

I say it's about time.

Politics can easily set us off on some tangent based on bogus science or cut productive progress off at the knees based on fear or uncertainty.

I think that is what LB is saying too?
