Si-Ge can indeed be integrated with CMOS, but I am not aware of anyone doing anything commercial along those lines. Maybe Intel or Xerox PARC or the bigger Japanese companies?

CMOS CCDS have been around for years...CCD stands for charge coupled device...which is how CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) devices work...more or less. (Semiconductor engineers, don't flame me). The issue with CCDs is they now have driver and compression circuitry on the same chip, and a 5,000 by 5,000 pixel device (25 mega pixel) is approaching consumer-level prices.

Speaking of cool, I just bought a Pentax Optio S4 digital cmaera with 4MPixels, and it is about the size of a pack of smokes. Fits in my shirt pocket, and has great sharpness (Pentax has always been known for good optics).

However, I still like my old 35mm (and larger) for best color and spatial resolution...and no pesky rechargable batteries (which I forget to charge)! I can get a standard 35mm slides scanned into 12000x6000 pixels (if I want).
