you might understand it as a rip off but it is not. Annuities can be viewed as triple A rated (often adjustable rate) sinking funds. Yield on annuities are usually considerably higher than on comparable sinking funds. This is due to the fact that insurance companies boost the yields by investing in a variety of different asset types and grades and yet the risks are not past down to the annuity holder.
