Moreover, according to a new Bureau of the Census working paper, start-ups in the first two years of operation accounted for virtually all of the net new jobs in the economy.

and as you know the failure rate for new small business (whether run out of the home or not) is quite high..

Two-thirds of new employer firms survive at least two years, and about half survive at least four years.

i think you make some valid points, however i think it's questionable to extrapolate from your or your husband's own personal experience and project onto others

the last jobs report was dismal no matter how you slice it.

i honestly did not expect to see anywhere close to the number of job creation that was being thrown around, but 1000 'new jobs' is statistically zero, to try to paper that over by concluding that the new jobs are 'self generated' (and undocumented) is pollyann-ish to the extreme, imo.

granted people out of work will do whatever to generate a "job" (even if it's selling junk on ebay and call that a business <g>) once their benefits run out to bring home a buck, but not everyone has the skillset that you do that lends itself well to independent contractor status

as an aside...

independent contractors, sole proprietors, small corp (s or c) all file income tax returns...why is it so hard to track the number of "new" jobs being generated by these entities? (not asking you personally, just wondering out loud)
