Just been looking how I have windows XP set up.

In internet options I have the security tab set so every thing is included on Local internet, no sites are in the trusted sites, and no sites are in the restricted sites. The Privacy tab is set on "medium".

I do remember having to fart around with XP, Zone Alarm, and setting up Ad Subtract when starting up The new version of Zone Alarm. At first I thought Ad subtract was no longer needed and tried to use the Zone Alarm filters to keep out the crapola. Then I started getting messages from porno sites. I then killed the Zone Alarm cookie and Ad filters and put Ad subtract back in. No trouble since then.

I later killed the messenger service too. On advice from someone here.
