I'm far from being up on the latest stuff wrt all the different compression algorithms, but I came across this site while poking around a bit. It gives a nice audio comparison of what voice quality can be achieved with different data rates. If space is a real concern, rates lower than 32 kbps might still be acceptable. Some compression algorithms depend on sophisticated signal processing in the player to recover a decent voice signal. Trial and error is still probably the best way to decide what is good enough using the player you have available.
