Maybe they figured they could hide with the other nuts in a Nestle bar. Swiss arrest 8 alleged Al Qaeda supporters in blasts probe By Irene Harnischberg, Associated Press, 1/10/2004 BERN, Switzerland -- Swiss police have made their first arrests of alleged Al Qaeda supporters -- eight foreigners suspected in the May 12 suicide attacks on Westerners in Saudi Arabia, officials said yesterday. About 100 federal police officers supported by state authorities raided homes across the country Thursday, Swiss Federal Police said. About 20 people were questioned in five states, from the city of Geneva to Zurich. The arrests may be the first outside Saudi Arabia in the bombings, which killed 35 people, including eight Americans and nine attackers. "The police action was in the context of terrorism investigations, especially in connection with the May 12 attack in Riyadh," police said in a statement. In the attacks, suicide bombers set off four explosions at compounds housing Westerners. On Nov. 8, a suicide car bomb killed 17 people and wounded 122 at a compound for foreign workers in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. Saudi and American officials attribute both attacks to Al Qaeda. Those arrested in Switzerland are being held on suspicion of providing logistical support to a criminal organization, police said. The suspects are being held in `investigative detention,' meaning they have not been formally charged. Police would give no further details. "We are at the beginning of the investigation," said Andrea Sadecky, a spokeswoman from Switzerland's federal prosecutor's office. A spokeswoman for the Saudi Embassy in Bern declined to comment on the arrests. Swiss officials had previously said Switzerland was not a key location in the financing or preparation of Al Qaeda attacks. That assertion had set it apart from neighboring countries, which have made dozens of terrorism-related arrests. Swiss authorities have disclosed that Mohamed Atta and a second hijacker briefly passed through Switzerland. Swiss officials have blocked 82 bank accounts containing $28 million in connection with probes into Al Qaeda and the Taliban. © Copyright 2004 Globe Newspaper Company.
