Report on the Word freezing problem....

After many many hours of trying to follow every lead given here I had:

-downloaded and ran two symantec virus finders/fixers for the NIMDA viruses- no luck

-used several microsoft downloads to clean and uninstall works

-disabled system retore function to prevent recurrences

-played endlessly with sysconfig

-rebooted, installed things about 10 times with slight variations with the clean boot instructions

-(GG: I also could not get a final clean boot because the LOAD GROUP STARTUP would not remain unchecked)

-did the file Extract and backup several times

SAME PROBLEM: insufficient system resources

No evidence of virus, and still the problem remained. Super frustrating...

Then I tried one final super simple thing referenced in this link courtesy of the cow:

word.mvps.org

Here is the utterly simple solution which worked immediately:

Using the Search tool, find a file called "Normal.dot"

Then simply rename it anything else (OldNormal was suggested).

Sure enough, the next attempt at launching Word, it created a new clean Normal.dot and open perfectly. All is now fine.

Moral of the Story: try the easiest things first!

And thanks to the cow, and Gottfried and the thread.

Good luck to GG, and hope it works for you.
