Yes, old tradition from the 1770s, those few decades, basic foundation of any two-party system.
(we did it too, for almost two decades)

OK, I admit, then those US keywords were "exclude" and later on "how many bubbles on a bar of soap".

Old habits, old habits..

Just think about it, few are as close to a real one-party system as USA these days, nutting much think, all the more to exclude and ignore.

Me not thinking Chine, they already have local multi-party-elections.

But so has Cuba, and Mexico has already done it.
