This provokes a couple of thoughts. First, I agree with the assessment – both politically and culturally. The corrupt political duopoly, on far too many issues, provides only a twiddle dee – twiddle dumb alternative. Partly this is true because of the cultural level problem. A large segment of the American populace has been sufficiently brainwashed, that they view any alternative to full blown corporatism, as “creeping socialism” – an anathema. Such a mindset believes that social nirvana was achieved during the Gilded Age, and any change from that mentality is to be resisted. Note the similarity between preemptive war and gunboat diplomacy. Secondly, “if Bush is ousted” is a very big if. The people that usually post on this thread, look at the preposterous Bush Admin, and can’t see how anyone, much less a majority, would vote to continue such an obvious disastrous folly. But that is exactly the most likely circumstance. I have a friend for over three decades – a very bright guy. In many different ways, he has demonstrated the depth of his intelligence and insight time and again. We haven’t seen much of each other in the last decade. So, it was with a certain level of horror, that today I realized he had bought the neo-con thesis “hook, line and sinker”. Since I don’t believe he suddenly “took a stupid pill.”, I can only conclude that the neo-con memeplex is far more infectious than even I had believed. I’m left with a feeling of impending doom akin to my experience in ’72 – can’t you people see what voting for that neofascist Nixon/Bush will lead to? And the answer is no, they can’t. Even those that bother to look at 60 Minutes this evening, will say it was right to go after Iraq the way we did, anyway. No matter how hard you shout Wake Up , they don’t. Very frustrating. lurqer
