My simplistic take is that Kashmir is a Muslim area that India will never let go. Too much pride involved. Sounds like Independence is the answer.

The simple answer is : depends on which side of the fence you're on.

Historically, the King of Kashmir (a hindu), acceded his kingdom to India, after India as a nation was formed.

Sure there are disputes etc, but many Indians and Pakistanis hope that religion is not the answer.
BTW: India has a larger muslim population, than the entire population of Pakistan.
