I found a couple interesting numbers in this document.

One is that individual and corporate tax receipts were $231 billion for 4Q, 2003. The other is that $43B of that was used to pay interest on the debt, and that's at these very low interest rates. It would be hard to imagine what adding another $1/2 trillion in 04 AND higher borrowing costs would lead to. Doesn't make my UST credit quality issue look so "out there" when one takes the blinders off, does it?
