Who had what when -- and why?
NYT is selling this as "Tape Shows General Clark Linking Iraq and Al Qaeda" but seems to ignore a really weird gaffe:

"Certainly there's a connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda," [Clark] said in 2002. "It doesn't surprise me at all that they would be talking to Al Qaeda, that there would be some Al Qaeda there or that Saddam Hussein might even be, you know, discussing gee, I wonder since I don't have any scuds and since the Americans are coming at me, I wonder if I could take advantage of Al Qaeda? How would I do it? Is it worth the risk? What could they do for me?"(Emphasis added)

Did Clark really believe Saddam Hussein would be the one to buy scud missiles from stateless, back-to-the-land Al Qaeda rather than the other way around?

Well before these 2002 statements it was widely known (well, on the web at least) Al Qaeda's best and brightest couldn't distinguish internet "how-to-build-an-atom-bomb" parodies from genuine instructions. These brave fighters left behind a number of Afghan hospital opportunities to collect radioactive dirty bomb material because, apparently, their Koran studies hadn't prepared them for little things like finding the Department of Radiology in any modern hospital. The list goes on and on. The best they can do is hire folks for the internet. Even their home video is amateurish.

Clark thought Saddam Hussein might have purchased scuds from Al Qaeda? I guess we shouldn't be surprised -- this is, after all, the same guy who thinks the Saudi army has elite special forces who can help us find Bin Laden if only we ask nice.
