There are so many generalizations in the above sentence that I don't know where to start. Basically, you pick a couple of incidents you find offensive, a behaviour that seems posh (and therefore target for criticism, for some reason), and a biased view of your country's motives. Anyone can do that. Care to see? French: "The desecration of the French name and culture ("cheese-eating surrender monkeys", "freedom fries", etc) seems to thrive in an environment where many sit in fast food joints gulping down copious amounts of junk food, rubbing their fat round bellies, and looking down at the French who largely were trying to uphold the rule of law." [You may have forgotten that French opposed the invasion of Iraq saying there was no proof for WMDs. Now it turns out they are right. Do you think Americans will apologize anytime soon for all the insults they threw France's way?] Muslim American: "The desecration of Muslims' shops seems to thrive in an environment where many TV channels and newspaper columns breed animosity towards all Muslims, while American Muslims are largely just trying to peacefully live their lives." [This did happen, I hope you remember - Muslims got attacked, and their shops were burned, etc. This happened in the US and it happened a bit more often than your "desecration of Jewish cemeteries in France" thing.] You see, it isn't hard to apply your template so that everyone can make an equally one-sided, biased, and insulting remark. Yes, we can be critical, and there is much about the Bush administration which I have criticized, but until some real solutions are presented, it comes off as passing wind. What are you talking about? Real solutions to what? To problems Bush created? As for the story itself, I picked it up in a post yesterday and didn't realize that it was untrue I know that. You do that often - just pick up a story and waste out time with it, just because is seems to support your prejudices about Europe, WITHOUT even bothering to see if it is true, false, biased, or whatever. It is good that you have realized it this time. One may always hope that you will be more careful next time you "pick up" a story. Come up with some substantive approach with real solutions To what, my dear North American friend who thinks he knows oh so much about Europe and its problems? Tell me, what problems would you like a "susbstantive approach" (???) to? What are these problems that keep you up at night? Oh and by the way, I would stop talking about "those in Parisian cafes snorting truffles". You are drawing too much attention to your lack of appreciation for the finer things in life, such as a social life, not to mention what truffles are and how they are ingested. I don't know where you live and what you do with your spare time, but if you think it is shocking that people might eat in a cafe once in a while, you must have a very sad existence indeed.
