Steve, institutional holdings also include shares held by individuals in street name (i.e., the name of the firm holding their account). The 98% figure is very high, but it doesn't tell us what we'd like to know--the major shareholders and the percentage of shares they hold.

Does anybody know how to find out how many mutual funds own SND

According to Morningstar 332 Mutual Funds own shares in SanDisk. Morningstar shows mutual funds own 28,623,597 of the 69,813,650 outstanding shares. Warning this data is not current as Mornigingstar shows reporting dates for mutual fund holdings varies from 5-31-03 to 11-30-03. Morningstar also list the 20 mutual funds with the largest holdings of Sandisk.

To access this data on Morningstar you must have a premium membership. Cost is $120 per year. Mornigstar does have a 14 day free trial premium membership offer.
