Fangorn, "I didn't claim that this is Bush's concern [asteroid impacts] but it should be. And given that neither of us know what he will say on Wednesday your veiled accusation is silly My veiled accusation? Whoa fellow. I assumed you were implying an administration concern about asteroids when you recently answered Killer Clowns inquiry that , "..the adminstration was said to see the initiative as an important national security measure...." Your reply was, "Two reasons jump to the top of a long list... asteroids (and comets) and China." I naturally assumed you were suggesting that the administration had exactly those concerns. My mistake, perhaps, but partly yours too. As for your Moon project it might help your credibility a little if you could find anybody at NASA or a politician with credibility who is actually supporting the idea to go to the Moon to save the human race. I'll repeat what I said in a previous post. If the Earth is vulnerable to an asteroid strike so is the Moon. But,If you're really concerned about an astronomical armageddon I think it is a better idea to build huge underground mines here on Earth and keep them fully stocked with people and supplies. Unless the asteroid splits the Earth in half they will be there to re-populate the planet in no time. I think I actually saw this plot-line in the movie "Dr. Strangelove". lol. I'll repeat. The moon is too far away to be used militarily. If you think there is a real threat of this you owe it to our government to explain your thesis in detail so that we may appropriately prepare for the worse. Maybe you can explain to us here exactly how China will use the moon to destroy us. Nuclear fusion, if it is possible, will utilize deuterium and tritiuim, isotopes of hydrogen which are readily available from sea water here on Earth. You keep talking about helium on the moon, or maybe it was hydrogen...you weren't sure. I think you should be sure before you spend our money to go to the there. hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu
