Price at the Pump Soars

Jan 13, 2004 3:48 pm US/Eastern

Pittsburgh (KDKA) A sudden jump in gas prices is forcing area drivers to dig a little deeper into their pockets.

According to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge, prices at the pump in the Pittsburgh area jumped ten-cents a gallon in the last week alone -- to an average of $1.56 per gallon of regular unleaded.
"It was just a $1.39 last week; now it's $1.53... I like to fill up my tank; now it cost me $15, where it usually cost me $10." -- Tracey Henderson, Gas Customer

"It costs too much. I need to spend money at the store buying things for me." -- Carol Gussman, Gas Customer
Service Station Owner Bob Gerenyi blames the rising prices on a weak dollar and the harsh winter.

"Our dollar lost its value," Gerenyi adds. "Any country that's selling us crude oil now, they're not getting as much for their crude oil; two, the weather's been cold, there's a demand in heating oil, so the heating oil's taking up a lot of the crude oil and that makes a shortage in gas."

The way things are going, station owners say they believe this latest hike is only the beginning, which worries some consumers, like Joe Caugherty. "I'm on a fixed income. I don't like it," but Caugherty adds, "if you want the gas you got to pay for it. You got to go where ever you can get it the cheapest."
