'Existe en política un principio preeminente, y anterior a todos los demás, que consiste en no ser pendejos.'

There exists a preeminent priniciple in politics, before all others, that consists in not being a pendejo.

The word 'pendejo' is quite difficult to translate properly. It is equally a verb and a noun. In my view, it means one who is so abysmally stupid in some areas but not necessarily in others so as to not properly fit within the confines of the adjectives "dull" or "dumb" or even "stupid." One resorts to "pendejo" when the condition is so serious as to require a mild curse in order to properly describe it. I can't think of an equivalent American English word, though I think the Brit "wanker" comes close.

In other words, a marvelous word. In the context of your post, it denotes a truism true for politics and all aspects of life.

Unfortunately, I think we've exhausted the Us vs. USA vs. TROY theme. You've made good points, though I definitely think that you minimize the dangers presented to all of us by the Islamistas and, yes, formerly by Saddam. I hope I'm wrong. Perhaps we can resuscitate the discussion when the time comes for a new initiative.

Cheers.
