Sorry, but I don't think it's reasonable to expect the entire public to research definitions of arcane terms. The public doesn't have that kind of attention span. I agree, though, that the media bear some responsibility for knowing the meaning and recognizing the disconnect. The folks who applied that inept label to the category of weapons should have come up with a more meaningful label, as well.

Which is why it makes sense to me for the Administration to chalk this up the the ubiquitous "communications problems," an approach commonly used for intra-office harmony in businesses. That approach has the benefit of being mollifying and non-blaming, and enables folks to move forward. It makes no sense to me that an public official would just let something like this fester, would widen the rift, rather than taking steps to get past it. Well, maybe a politician would. A statesman wouldn't.
