JJ:

I think we are seeing the early stages of what will prove to be an "All American Consumer Pull-back" this spring. The evidence is really starting to spread right across much of retailing.

At this end, it looks like Joe One-Pack has reached his "re-fi" limits, his credit card is maxed out, his banker won't meet with him to discuss a "consolidation loan", his wife just had her hours cut back at her job at Walmart and his unemployment benefits are nearing an end.

Before summer, the key issue in the coming pres election is going to boil down to three words..... "jobs, jobs, jobs". Consumers don't comsume all that well when they are not working and try as it might, the government is starting to lose the propaganda battle with respect to just how bad unemployment really is.

Best, Earlie
