Even Bill Gates' Dad was talking publicly a couple of years ago about how he was against cuts. Amy, the numbers of wealthy who are objecting are few and far between........Gates Sr and Jr, Buffet and Soros to name a couple of the few.I think there are rich people that are quite a bit disgusted. There are some but if it were as prevalent as you suggest, Bush would not be getting ready to do a third round. Yes, that's right........he's working with his advisors to prepare another tax cut. This is no time to be naive about who we have in the White House. The issue is more about people's philosophies. Sure, some people operate under the greedy-b philosophy - but it's not guaranteed these are only wealthy folks - maybe they are also unwealthy folks who perceive they can't afford to contribute. Also, most people who are wealthy do not seem to associate themselves as wealthy - simply because there's always someone wealthier. There's this one VC who was complaining to me about how he had to stop the cranes from building goodness-knows-what when the stock market crashed and hurt his personal finances. I am by nature an empathetic person and could see he was in pain, but on hindsight, I'm thinking geez. Stay on this thread for a while. There is a cross section of Americana that posts here. You will see what probably close to 50% believe........that gov't programs are a sham whether they're for the poor, the physically challenged, Seniors etc. Then go read the posts on the GW Bush thread. Bush supporters predominate because liberals typically are kicked off......yes, its a moderated thread. Listen to what mainstream Bush supporters post on that thread. They are not enlightened; in fact, they are unwilling to be even fair. And forget empathy......that's a dirty word to them. Remember, I once posted that the INTC thread was one of civility whereas the AMD thread was a pig sty. The main difference between the two threads.....some INTC longs who were saints on the INTC thread were piglets on the AMD thread. Well, this issue re. tax cuts is somewhat analogous. You, Amy J, hang with people who think that you have to give back some of what you get for the good of society. That's not the predominate view in this country......certainly not among Bush supporters. They view....its about keeping as much of what you make as you can. They don't care about the poor, the Seniors, the physically handicapped etc. They care only about themselves. Sad but true.........a few days on the GW Bush thread will make it clear to you. RE: "Reagan had cut off funding for mental hospitals, some welfare, medical benefits etc, and suddenly, all these misfits were let onto the streets." That was the worst move. Not according to the Reagan supporters......in their minds, he was brilliant and his cuts were long overdue. They didn't care........most of the Reagan supporters live in the suburbs.....some behind gates. That's not where the soon to be homeless went when they were released from the hospitals, institutions and prisons. They went to the cities......the rich don't care about the American city so it was fine with them. It was those of us who lived in NYC, SF, LA and Chicago that bore the brunt of Reagan's trashing of social programs. These people care only about themselves period! One really strange thing about the Bay Area, for an area that is generally more sensitive, it treats the mentally ill not so good. Agnews gets kicked out, etc. A lady I know had to fight to maintain her handicapped child in one of the schools here, she created a law a decade ago so it wouldn't happen to others. It's funny how this area can be really nice, and yet not so nice to the handicapped people. That's very surprising........I think Seattle does a decent job taking care of is mentally ill and handicapped population. Of course, it always could be better. :~(( ted
