Didn't they say that about the Italians, the Poles, the Germans? And worse about the Irish-though they COULD speak English.

Today the only segment of our population who CAN'T speak English is the low-income, illiterate segment of the black community-and they've been here for CENTURIES.

Our second-generation Hispanics speak quite GOOD English, thank you very much. And it's not even a hundred years yet...

New York City, BTW, was founded by the Dutch, who didn't bother much with English. Find a descendent of theirs today who speaks Dutch...

I see C doesnt agree with you. I should take him down to Miami, I can show him OODLES of people AND BUSINESSES that dont speak a word of English. Today, if you are in business in Broward or Dade Counties and increasingly in Palm Beach County you MUST have as many people as possible to be BILINGUAL. In Dade county you cant even get a job as a school teacher if you are not Bi lingual. How do I know, a friend of mine graduated with a MASTERS DEGREE in Education from U of M (not an inconsequential school if you like football (gg)) and was UNABLE to find employment as a teacher in Dade county as he was not bilingual. He ended up moving to California. jdn
