Any time I need political expediency, I'll call up Gray Davis.

This is a thread where we look at everything from it's Political aspect. But the problem here is much bigger than getting Bush reelected.

We have five to ten million illegals. No one knows for sure. Trying to close the Mexican border is shoveling water against the tide. It just can't be done. I know you think that if we throw enough money at it, we can. I don't agree.

We have to try to find a way to get them to go back and forth. It's not impossible. The Italians went back to Italy in huge numbers between 1850 and 1950.

A Mexican who knows he can go back and forth can make the bucks here and live like a King back in his home village in Mexico. A lot of them do it now.

My only problem with open borders is our welfare state. If they were'nt costing us big bucks, it would be fine. We need to find a way to make it work.

And he did it for political reasons: to get the vote of Hispanics who are citizens.

The clearest beneficiary in this is the businesses who illegally hire illegal immigrants. Good for business, calculated to be good for himself, although I'm not sure that will pan out. All but oblivious to the needs of the country. You'd think he'd at least have the good taste to be a little less blatant about it.
