Action does not neccesarily require money
is the thrust of my previous post, while we can argue all day about how aid as a %of GDP is pitiful etc.much of the aid comes with strings attached, India is the largest recipient of aid from UK, at 100 million GBP, it is still a decimal point for India, and in return much of the direction gets dictated by the aid giver, invariably to open markets, reduce govt deficits, import this and export that etc.

One of the bright spots in India is the emergence of a healthy Non Governmental sector, I do not know where the money comes from but it is pretty diversified, foreign aid agencies, Indian corporates, non residents and the indian middle class.
Here is what one person has done in terms of creating a website of NGO jobs. There are jobs in Afghanistan and Iraq, some paying E2200, do not know whether that is per year or per month.

This other ngo called Barefoot College also does some wonderful stuff, in solar power for villages etc, good enough to be featured in global best practices.

An Indian Ngo called Center for Science and Environment is doing great stuff to come up with local solutions for local problems such as rainwater harvesting, urban pollution etc.

Afghanistan needs to be free from war before anything else can take root. And whatever takes root will be sustainable only if it emerges from within, than being imposed by others. Maybe the druglords will help plant trees, if only to prevent flooding of their opium crop or to help OBL to hide.
