Since you raised our rather bizarre "war on drugs" I will leave you with a thought before I retire here. Ever consider the parallel between illegal drugs and illegal immigration?

Both involve four basic issues: border interdiction, domestic eradication within our borders, domestic demand for the product and the consequences of product use.

Almost all prescriptions for these problems assume that one of these dimensions can be altered to achieve 100% perfection. We can stop them all, we can expel them all, we can stop anyone from using them, and we will then eradicate the minor bad consequences from having them around. Let's face it, most illegal immigrants work somewhere and most drug use doesn't cause any more damage than alcohol in a community.

But arguing the inevitable realities of such a situation is not popular at all politically. Grand crusades make for much better speeches - STOP THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!! GET RID OF THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!! PUNSIH ALL WHO USE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we end up with these bizarre, futile policies that spend billions, don't get the job done and leave our society damaged in ways that are ultimately preventable.

All in the name of feeding the human need for grandiosity.

The European cafes have their fair share of problems, like the rest of the world. But bizarre crusades tilting against windmills are not among them now.

Have a good one.
