Based on our government's behavior over (at a minimum) the last 50 or 60 years, "empire" is the only word that fits. Over the holidays I read Chomsky's most recent book: Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance (The American Empire Project)

He lays out a very damning policy history and projects to what are very believable, likely goals.

I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
