January 14 , 2004

Georgia U.S. Rep.Sanford Bishop endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark on Wednesday, saying the former NATO commander has the skills to lead the nation in uncertain times.

I believe that Gen. Clark will bring leadership and expertise that we so sorely need, said Bishop, speaking at the Georgia state capitol.

Bishop, a Democrat from Albany whose district includes several military bases, also took a jab at President Bush, saying Clarks military background would help him correctly read and understand intelligence.

Critics accuse the Bush administration of misrepresenting reports about weapons of mass destruction to justify the war in Iraq.

Bishop joins a list of Clark endorsements that includes former Atlanta mayor and U.S. ambassador Andrew Young and former Secretary of the Navy John Dalton.

Bishops endorsement comes days before Clarks rival, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, will meet with former President Jimmy Carter in Plains _ Carters hometown in Bishops southwest Georgia district.

In a written release Wednesday, Carter called the meeting an opportunity for me to learn more about the candidate and his views and said he would not be endorsing Dean during the meeting.

Carter already has met with Clark. Both meetings were requested by the candidates.

Bishop sits on the Houses powerful Appropriations Committee and is a member of the congressional Blue Dog Democrats _ a centrist group known to be more conservative than other members of their party.

Bishop said he respects the campaign Dean has run -particularly its role in energizing new voters - but said he was impressed with Clarks credentials after several meetings in Washington.
