During WWII the experienced German soldiers dreaded a new commander. Due to lack of experience he would put the platoon in a lot of danger to show results.

Once the platoon discovered this type was going to send them to their deaths they would cause an 'accident' to get rid of thim.

A good commander was protected since he was experienced and having him there minimized the risk of having a green horn to send the men to death.

The former Wehrmacht soldier who told me that, said he retunred form leave three times and he had to join new platoons. His platoons were decimated because they were having a new commander. He said he was lucky three times since the replacement happened when he was on leave.

"No! Anything but the Russian front!" Soldiers fighting in the western front who needed to be disciplined once and for all were sent to the Russian front.

It was assured that he would be sent to a front where he would live max. a week.

Any German commander had a way to discpline soldiers by saying: "One more time and I send you to the Russian fornt!"
It couldn be a simple sargeant who had no power to send him to his death, but it worked:

No sargeant, it won't happen again! Anything but the Russian front, please!"

Ther's no Russian front in Iraq, is there? So there's need to invent a "Russian front"...

<<Suell family says the military has it wrong. Suellboy, as he was known to those closest to him, was strong-minded and a God-fearing Christian. The son of a minister, he preached to others that suicide was a sin. He drew hearts on the letters he sent to his wife and said he could not wait to come home to see his daughters.>>
