Pity such a small minority of Americans ever bothers to get one, much less travel abroad.

Not a pity at all. Some of us live whole, happy, fulfilled lives right where we are. No need to go rushing around hither and yon trying to find Aristotelian happiness. We have it right here.

History tells us that the educated have always thought of travel as a way to broaden the mind- that's why the English always sent their children to Europe, and your education wasn't finished properly until you'd been somewhere else. Unfortunately most people are comfortable in very minimalist minds. Minimalism is great for furniture- I'm a big fan of Scandinavian teak furniture- but it leaves a lot to be desired in a mind.

A mind is a terrible thing to minimize :-)
