I have read enough of the book to know that her complaint about the "tone of the book" is really her rage at the measured presentation of the side of the FA argument that she totally disagrees with.

Perhaps her disagreement with the argument is the "root cause" of the rage, if I dare use that term, or a contributing factor, but her review addressed the tone, not the substance.

I posted earlier today about the appreciation I have recently developed for the pro-war position from reading pieces heavy on analysis and devoid of 'tude. Tone matters if you want to persuade. If you just want to beat your chest, then it really doesn't matter if you have any arguments at all.

I'm only part way through the timely Murphy Brown piece. When I see that belligerent, self-absorbed and nasty tone, I think of boys who have reached physical adulthood without having developed character or class.
