At the time of Traian the Roman Empire got all the way to and across Eufrat. Too much Roman Empire even for Romans? Just want to say, I can also dig out questionable parallels. What's wrong with the oikoumene parallel out of Economist? Nothing, it's just a parallel. Btw, what laced the whole place, the people in the street, together was Helenism and not the Roman legions.

All these comparisons and metaphores are a good mind-jogging tool. But its our times and present-day border conditions (including far-away roots back in Rome and Palestine), that chart out the future.

btw, Motovun is a very nice town - similarly to Groznjan across the Mirna valley, full of (retired) intellectuals and artists
