I'm not knowledgeable enough to appraise - let alone discover - Gorilla candidates. Consequently I watch for the financial footprints of others - whom I assume are a lot smarter and more resourceful than I am.

Yesterday provided an interesting illustration. Wellington Management filed an SC-13G with the SEC to reveal that it had acquired 8.2% of Quantum Fuel Systems (QTWW). This was a new position for Wellington, not an addition to an existing position.

QTWW isn't a new company - it's over 40 years old. However, it's primary product line is in a relatively new and potentially rapidly growing industry - from a recent press release:

"Quantum's ultra-light weight composite fuel storage, fuel injection and metering technologies, electronic control products and OEM level systems integration capabilities have enabled the company to develop a product portfolio with state-of-the-art technologies and products, a diverse customer base, and strong alliances with partners such as General Motors and Sumitomo Corporation.

Quantum is a Tier 1 OEM supplier and a member of the GM Fuel Cell Alliance of fuel cell commercialization companies."

GM seems to be strongly committed to the hydrogen fuel cell concept. They recently awarded QTWW a contract for a line of their 2005 pickup trucks.

I certainly wouldn't categorize QTWW as a King or Prince, but rather as a potential King or Prince. It's probably early to get excited about QTWW, but certainly it's worth watching.

Of the 57 institutional investors who own the stock (as of the end of 4Q03) 27 were new positions. Of course, they can afford to take the longer term view of their investments.
