Glad I could facilitate such an interesting voyage of exploration. There is no defending the know-nothing totalitarians who would jam their ignorance and intolerance down everyone's throat.

In my experience in Texas and elsewhere around the south, there are far fewer of those than your typical politically and socially conservative Bubba who shops at WalMart and just tries to provide a decent life for his family. They may prefer "Dumb and Dumber" to "Manon of the Spring" - I really don't care, I never begrudge anyone their space as long as they extend me the same respect.

As for bridging the Bubba to international traveler gap, Clinton's political genius was precisely that, never making people feel completely excluded. No accident he was the only Democrat elected twice since FDR, especially in the post-Reagan era.

It comes down to the Rodney King view in the end. To combat intolerance, the rest of us have to try to get along. The hate-talk radio that made "liberal" a dirty word won't be countered by demonizing non-liberals in return. Just like national, ethnic and religious gaps can't be bridged by harping on new evil caricatures.

JMHO as always.
