Good post, MQ. The US school system is geared at producing an infinitesimal number of guys who know a subject very narrowly but real real deep.
The rest need only to be trained to be porter of a hotel and cashier at the bank level. Broad knowledge but skin deep depth.

That said:

Being good at math is akin at being good at aerophotogrametry or geodesy. Math? Why good at math when we have clever dirty PC's and software?

Why be good at geodesy or aerophotogrametry when there is GPS and GIS and computer muscle? You would say: we need the guys to developed those technologies. Well, we need an infinitesimal number of them.

I have a reasonable aptitude for maths. I did say the best maths teachers were women in my case. Good maths teachers are thin on the ground as they often confuse even talented students. Maths teachers just cannot relate the concepts to everyday world where the student can understand.

If found this particular distressing as an undergraduate. All the lectures were male and talked gobbldy gook, like we all do on occasions. It wasn't long before I was two years behind on my courses.

Then I took this book into the library on a daily basis, skipping lectures as the were a waste of time for me, and went though it page by page. All I needed was that book and some blank pieces of paper. Three months later I was level with the rest of the class.

The trouble with your generalizations on many matters is, if believed, they will cause biases in the system, and inevitably good students will be passed over. It happens all the time.

Oh yea.. one last thing. In Britain the females are WAY AHEAD of the males in all subjects. That's before they go to university. Something to be concerned about. You know, prejudices and stuff like that -g-
